The central city of northwestern Nigeria. It lies about 340 km northwest of Zaria, on the Sokoto River, a tributary of the Niger River. It was a small village on the ancient Saharan caravan route, but in the early 19th century it became a military base for the Fulani. In 1809, the Fulani absorbed the Hausa kingdoms and established an Islamic kingdom, which became the capital of the kingdom. It is a holy place for the Islamic faith of both tribes. It is known as a producer of leather products, especially the skins of the red goat, which are the raw material for Moroccan leather. It is a distribution center for Guinea corn, millet, rice, groundnuts, cotton, tobacco, donkeys, camels, horses, mules, etc. Population: 180,900 (1991 estimate).
