Kashiwa [city] - Kashiwa
A city in northwestern Chiba Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. Most of the city is on the Shimousa Plateau, and the Tone River flows southeast along the northern border. In the early modern period, the city center was a post town on the Mito Kaido road. The Joban Line and Tobu Noda Line cross here, and since the electrification of the Joban Line in 1949, it has rapidly developed into a residential city near Tokyo. Large stores have opened around Kashiwa Station, making it a wide-area commercial city. Since the 1960s, industrial parks have been developed, and industries such as electrical equipment, food, and metals have been thriving. The Joban Expressway runs through the city. Vegetables are grown in rural areas. The Tsukuba Express opened in 2005. In March 2005, Numazu Town, Higashikatsushika County, was incorporated. The city suffered damage during the Great East Japan Earthquake. 114.74 km2 . 404,012 people (2010).
