John Philip Sousa

American composer. Known for his many marches, including "The Stars and Stripes Forever" (1897), "The Washington Post" (1889), and "El Capitan" (1895). Born to a military band trombonist, he learned violin and solfège from an early age. After leading the Marine Band in Washington from 1880 to 1892, he formed the Sousa Wind Orchestra himself, toured the world several times, and was called the "March King." In addition to 140 marches, he also composed 11 operettas and 12 suites, and invented the sousaphone, an improved version of the tuba, laying the foundation for modern wind bands.

アメリカの作曲家。『星条旗よ永遠なれ』（1897）をはじめ、『ワシントン・ポスト』（1889）、『エル・カピタン』（1895）など、数多い行進曲（マーチ）で知られる。軍楽隊のトロンボーン奏者の子に生まれ、バイオリン、ソルフェージュを幼時から学ぶ。1880～92年ワシントンの海兵軍楽隊の指揮者として君臨したのち、自らスーザ吹奏楽団を結成、世界的な演奏旅行を数度行い「マーチ王」と称せられた。140曲のマーチのほか、11曲のオペレッタ、12曲の組曲などを作曲、さらにチューバを改良したスーザフォーンsousaphoneを考案し、現代の吹奏楽の基礎を築いた。
