…Encyclopedic works of great magnitude were produced by Raphael Bluteau, Antonio Bernay, and others, and various academies were founded. The most important of these was the Arcadia Lusitana (founded in 1756), whose theoretical director was the poet Correa Garçon, and many neoclassical works were produced by this academy. In the midst of the dominance of the neoclassical atmosphere, the female poet Leonor de Almeida (1750-1839), who had come into contact with new ideas in Vienna and London, played an important role as a pioneer of the next generation of romantic literature. …
