Hibakari - Hibakari

A snake of the order Squamata, family Colubridae, class Reptilia. It is a non-venomous species found in Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, and remote islands such as the Satsunan Islands, with a total length of 40 to 65 cm. Its body is long and slender, its back is brown or gray-brown, and both edges of each abdominal plate are lined with small black spots. It inhabits waterside and damp places in forests from hills to mountains. It is often active in the evening or during the twilight hours of the day, and sometimes hides underwater. Its name comes from the fact that if you are bitten by this snake, your life will be over in that day, but it is actually docile and completely harmless. It feeds on frogs, fish, earthworms, etc. It lays about 5 to 10 eggs in the summer.

爬虫(はちゅう)綱有鱗(ゆうりん)目ナミヘビ科のヘビ。本州、四国、九州、および薩南(さつなん)諸島などの離島に分布する無毒種で、全長40～65センチメートル。体は細長く、背面は褐色または灰褐色で、各腹板の両縁には黒色の小斑点(はんてん)が並ぶ。丘陵から山地の森林の水辺や湿った場所に生息する。夕方や薄暗い日中に行動することが多く、水中に潜むこともある。本種にかまれれば命はその「日ばかり」というのが名の由来とされるが、性質はおとなしくまったくの無害。餌(えさ)はカエル、魚、ミミズなどである。夏に5～10個ほどを産卵する。
