A snake of the order Squamata, family Colubridae, class Reptilia. It is a non-venomous species found in Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, and remote islands such as the Satsunan Islands, with a total length of 40 to 65 cm. Its body is long and slender, its back is brown or gray-brown, and both edges of each abdominal plate are lined with small black spots. It inhabits waterside and damp places in forests from hills to mountains. It is often active in the evening or during the twilight hours of the day, and sometimes hides underwater. Its name comes from the fact that if you are bitten by this snake, your life will be over in that day, but it is actually docile and completely harmless. It feeds on frogs, fish, earthworms, etc. It lays about 5 to 10 eggs in the summer. [Takahiro Matsui] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
