Lydia Koidula
1843‐86
Estonian poet. Showing talent for poetry at a young age, she wrote poetry collections such as Wildflowers (1866) and Nightingales on the River Emma (1867) while working in the literary column of her father's newspaper. She is also known as the mother of national drama, and was at the forefront of the cultural movement during the period of national awakening (1860s-1880s), working hard to establish the National Theatre, which she also composed and directed herself. Some of her poems, which passionately sang of patriotism, were composed into music and are still widely loved and sung by the Estonian people today. [Kikukawa Jo]
