The protagonist of the novel Les Miserables (1862) by the French author Hugo. Jean Valjean, a poor craftsman, is imprisoned for stealing bread to save his sister's children who are crying from hunger. He is released from prison with a deep hatred for society, but a few days later, a bishop named Myriel treats him like a brother, and his conscience is awakened. He then establishes an industry in a certain town, making it rich and clean. He also sacrifices himself for the people, overcoming many hardships and dangers, raising Cosette, the young daughter of an unfortunate prostitute, and marrying her to the upright young man Marius, and dying like a saint, putting into practice the teachings of Bishop Myriel.
