A small island located 35km northwest of Cape York, at the northern tip of Queensland in northeastern Australia. It has an area of 3km2 and a population of 2,483 (1996). It is the administrative, economic and transportation centre of the Torres Strait Islands. It is known for pearl oyster harvesting, which has a history dating back to the 1860s, and many Japanese people used to work there. Today, the main activities are pearl farming and shrimp fishing. The airport is located on the neighbouring Horn Island. It is said that Captain Bligh of the British warship Bounty named it in 1789, along with the nearby Wednesday Island and Friday Island.
