Thursday Island - Thursday Island (English spelling)

A small island located 35km northwest of Cape York, at the northern tip of Queensland in northeastern Australia. It has an area of ​​3km2 and a population of 2,483 (1996). It is the administrative, economic and transportation centre of the Torres Strait Islands. It is known for pearl oyster harvesting, which has a history dating back to the 1860s, and many Japanese people used to work there. Today, the main activities are pearl farming and shrimp fishing. The airport is located on the neighbouring Horn Island. It is said that Captain Bligh of the British warship Bounty named it in 1789, along with the nearby Wednesday Island and Friday Island.

オーストラリア北東部、クイーンズランド州北端、ヨーク岬の北西35キロメートルにある小島。面積3平方キロメートル、人口2483（1996）。トレス海峡諸島の行政、経済、交通の中心地。1860年代以来の歴史をもつ真珠貝採取で知られ、かつて日本人も多数活躍したことがある。現在は真珠養殖とエビ漁などが中心。空港は隣のホーン島にある。1789年にイギリス軍艦バウンティ号のブライ船長が、近くの水曜島、金曜島などとともに命名したといわれる。
