…At the height of the black liberation struggle in 1967-68, he was a leading figure among radical black writers and took action. He advocated “literature as a revolutionary weapon,” and at one point he leaned toward Marxism and then Maoism. He even changed his name to the Arabic word Amiri Baraka and strongly advocated the abolition of white values. His book The Soul of the Blues (1963), subtitled “Black Music in White America,” is an excellent work that examines jazz and blues from a historical and social perspective. …
