A mining city in the Andes in the west of Junin Department, central Peru. Population 35,000 (1990). Located in the upper reaches of the Mantaro River, at an altitude of 3,825m. The city developed around the smelter established by the Cerro de Pasco Mining Company. It refines copper, zinc, silver and other ores from the Cerro de Pasco mine in the north, and the Morrococha and Casapalca mines in the west.
