Haiku poet and ukiyo-zoshi author. Family name: Ihara. His origins and lineage are unknown, but one theory is that he was a wealthy Osaka townsman who went by the common name Hirayama Togo and passed on his stage name to his clerk. He first went by the pen name Tsurunaga and later Saikaku. He entered the Teimon school of haiku at the age of 15-16, and later switched to the Danrin school. He was active in the Yasakazu haiku, and in 1684 recited 23,500 verses alone in one day and night at the head of Sumiyoshi Shrine. He called himself Niman-o and Niman-do. He published haiku collections such as Ikutama Manku and Oyakazu. In 1682, he published Amorous Life Man, and founded the Ukiyo-zoshi. In various genres such as erotic stories, townspeople, samurai stories, and miscellaneous stories, he portrayed the lively economic life of townspeople, the hedonistic life of pleasure quarters, and the courage and sense of duty of samurai society. Both are collections of short stories that freely utilize storytelling techniques, and the way in which the stories unfold does not necessarily converge on a theme or a character, and this has the same roots as the principles of haiku. Representative works include "Amorous Life on a Woman," "Amorous Five Women," "Saikaku's Okimiyage," "Nihon Eitaigura," "Seken Munesanyo," "Budo Denraiki," and "Saikaku Shokoku Banashi."

俳人，浮世草子作者。姓は井原。出自，家系は不明だが，一説によれば，俗名平山藤五で，名跡を手代に譲った裕福な大坂の町人という。初め鶴永，のちに西鶴と号する。15〜16歳ころから貞門俳諧に入り，のちに談林派に転向。矢数俳諧に活躍し，1684年住吉社頭で一昼夜２万3500句を独吟。二万翁，二万堂と自称。俳諧集《生玉万句》《大矢数》などを出した。1682年，《好色一代男》を刊，浮世草子を創始した。好色物，町人物，武家物，雑話物などの各分野で，活気あふれる町人の経済生活や遊里での享楽生活を，あるいは武家社会の意気地と義理の生活を描いている。いずれも話芸的な方法を自在に駆使した短編小説集で，主題に収斂したり，人物像に凝集するとは限らない展開のしかたに俳諧の原理と同根のものが見出せる。代表作に《好色一代女》《好色五人女》《西鶴置土産》《日本永代蔵》《世間胸算用》《武道伝来記》《西鶴諸国ばなし》などがある。
