In the chapter on "Supreme Law," the Constitution of Japan imposes an obligation on the Emperor, Ministers of State, Diet members, judges, and other public officials to respect and uphold the Constitution in order to ensure that the Constitution is the supreme law (Article 99), and new public officials are required by law to take an oath to respect and uphold the Constitution. It also states that the general public should "make constant efforts" to maintain the rights and freedoms set forth in the Constitution (Article 12).
