Kujikasagake - Kujikasagake

...It is one of the archery games performed for martial arts training, and is a sport in which players shoot at targets at long distances from horseback. Its name comes from the fact that the target was made with a hat. The target was made of cypress wood with cowhide on the front and cotton between the leather and the board, and a circle of appropriate size drawn in ink in the center was used. The target distance was 10 jo (about 30 m). The arrows used were large, excluding the arrowhead, and had a hikime pattern made for hat-hanging. Depending on how far the target was, there were two types: far-away hat-hanging and small-away hat-hanging. There were also other types such as Shinji-kasagake, which was used for shrine rituals, Cho-kasagake, which was used to determine the opponent by drawing lots, Hyakuban-kasagake, and Tanabata-kasagake....

…武芸鍛練のために行われた射芸の一つで，馬上より遠距離の的を射る競技。その由来は笠を懸けて的としたことによる。的は檜を裏板に用い，表に牛革を張り，革と板の間に綿を入れ，中央に墨で適宜の大きさの丸を描いた連銭のそれが使用された。的間（まとあい）は10丈(約30m)。矢は鏃（やじり）を除いて鏑（かぶら）を大きく笠懸用に作った蟇目（ひきめ）が用いられた。的の遠近により遠笠懸，小笠懸の別があった。ほかに神社の祭祀に供される神事笠懸，鬮（くじ）によって敵手を定め勝負を決する鬮笠懸，また百番笠懸，七夕笠懸などの種類があった。…
