Kenshun

Japanese:
Kenshun
Year of death: Enbun 2/Shohei 12.7.16 (1357.8.2)
Year of birth: 1299
A Shingon Buddhist monk during the Northern and Southern Courts period. He became a guardian monk for the samurai clan and brought the Daigo sect to its heyday. He was the son of Hino Toshimitsu. He received the transmission of the Law from Kensuke and became the 21st abbot of Sanboin. He allied with Ashikaga Takauji and expelled Monkan, who had been the guardian monk for Emperor Go-Daigo. In March 1336 (Kenmu 3/Engen 1), he became the head priest of Daigo-ji Temple and also served as the head priest of To-ji Temple and the head priest of Negoro-ji Temple, making him the pinnacle of the Shingon sect. He also confiscated the temple land held by those within the temple who supported the Southern Court and integrated it into Sanboin, giving the temple a monopoly on the position of head priest. The golden age of the temple in the early Muromachi period was largely due to the shrewd political power of Kenshun, who was able to discern the times. He was also an outstanding renga composer and poet. <References> Hashimoto Hatsuko, "The Diary of Sanboin Kenshun Sojo" (Daigoji Cultural Research Institute Research Bulletin, No. 12)
