A strait between Cape Calimer, at the tip of the Cauvery River delta in southern India, and Cape Pedro, at the northernmost point of Ceylon. It is 55 km wide. To the southwest of this is Palk Bay, which is connected to the Gulf of Mannar by two islands and a shallow area called Adam's Bridge. To the northeast is the Bay of Bengal.
