A port town in the north of the Republic of Mozambique, in southeast Africa. Population 13,000 (1960). Facing the Mozambique Channel, it is a good natural port on a small island about 5 km from the mainland, but the land is hot and humid. Rumbo on the opposite shore is connected to inland Malawi by rail, but the new port of Nacala is located about 50 km north, so the port is less important. It has been an Arab port since ancient times, but in 1508-10 the Portuguese built a fort, a Christian church, and a building to collect customs.
