Eight Great Mountain People - Hachidaisanjin (English spelling) Ba-da-shan-ren
[Live] Tiankei 6 (1626). Jiangxi, Nanchang
[Died] Kangxi 44 (1705)
A Chinese painter from the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. Born into the royal family of the Ming dynasty. His secular surname was Zhu, and his given name was Tang, but it is unclear. After the fall of the Ming dynasty, he became a monk and had many Buddhist names and titles, including Chuanqi, Xuege, Renya, and Geshan. As a high-ranking monk, he had many disciples, but was later arrested by the county magistrate and went insane (one theory is that he faked insanity). He escaped and returned to Nanchang, where he spent his time painting and calligraphy. His bird-and-flower paintings, inspired by Ming painters Shen Zhou and Xu Wei, and his landscape paintings influenced by Dong Qichang, appeal sharply to people's hearts, and both display a highly individualistic, simple brushwork and rich expressive content. His representative work is "Anwanjo" (Izumiya Hakukokan).
