Xining
The capital of Qinghai Province, China. The Qinghai-Tibet-Ganqing-Ningshu Highway passes through or is the starting point. Along the Lanqing (Lanzhou - Xining) - Qinghai-Tibet (Xining - Lhasa) Railway, it is a major trade center for the interior regions of Qinghai, Xinjiang, Tibet, etc. It distributes agricultural and livestock products and salt, and in recent years has seen particular growth in the woolen textile and dairy industries. It is home to Qinghai University and Qinghai University for Nationalities. Ta'er Monastery (Ta'er Temple or Jinwa Temple) in the southwest is the birthplace of Tsongkhapa, founder of the Yellow Hat sect of Lamaism (Tibetan Buddhism). Population: 920,000 (2014).
