An island in the Visayan Islands, located in the central Philippines. It is generally mountainous, with the highest point at 2,181m above sea level. It has been open since ancient times, and rice, sugarcane, coconut palms, and tobacco are cultivated mainly in the southern plains, making it the grain-producing region of the central Philippines. Horses, which are pastured in the mountains, are one of the region's specialties. The population is concentrated mainly in the coastal plains. The capital is Iloilo. Including the islands, the area covers 12,297 ^km2 . The population is 3.13 million (1990).
