… When the Qing dynasty replaced the Ming dynasty as the capital in 1644 (the first year of the Shunzhi era), the Inner City was used exclusively as a residence for the Eight Banner Soldiers (Manchu, Mongolian, and Han) and their families, and the Han people, including merchants and government officials, were not allowed to live there, and were all forced to move to the Outer City. This is probably why Westerners called the Inner City of Beijing the Tatar City (Tatar City, Manchu City) and the Outer City the Chinese City (Han City).
