… Under the manor system, leather was produced and the demand increased by craftsmen who left the government-run workshops and were employed by the manor lords with their skills, and the riverside workers who inherited the skills made the butchering of dead cattle and horses part of their livelihood. In addition, the kirikawanoza, a trade organization of kirikawa craftsmen who collected products from direct leather producers and sold them after cutting them into suitable pieces for different uses, appeared in Kyoto in the mid-12th century, and became the origin of the later leather and leather shops. It is believed that direct leather producers were diverse, including hunters and mountain people, but the majority of them were people of low social standing and were presumably of extremely low social status. …

… 荘園制のもとでは,従来の官営工房から流出した技術者たちがその技能をもって荘園領主に抱えられたり,技能を受けついだ河原者たちが斃牛馬(たおれぎゆうば)の解体処理を生業の一環としたりして,皮革生産が行われ,高まる需要に応じていた。また,皮革の直接生産者から製品を集め,それを用途に応じて適当に裁断したものを商う切革(きりかわ)(切皮)職人の同業組織である切革座(きりかわのざ)も12世紀なかばの京都で出現し,後世の皮屋・切革屋の源流をなした。皮革の直接生産者は,狩猟民・山人を含めて多様であったとみられるが,その主たる部分は賤民的存在の人々で,社会的地位はきわめて低かったと推察される。…
