A large snail shell of the family Pectiniidae that lives in tropical waters (illustration). When young, the shell is thin and spindle-shaped, but when it becomes adult it becomes heavy and sturdy, measuring 18 cm in height and 12 cm in width. It has nine coils. The outer opening of the shell opens wide, and not only does the edge thicken, it also expands high and rounded upwards, becoming higher than the apex of the shell, so that the ridges of the coil are no longer visible from the front. The surface of the shell is smooth and has thin vertical stripes of brown and yellowish-white. It is widely distributed in the tropical Pacific Ocean south of Amami Oshima, and lives in shallow waters at a depth of 0 to 20 m. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
