Wols - Wols (English spelling)

German-born painter. His real name was Alfred Otto Wolfgang Schülze. He was born in Berlin and was active as an international painter in Paris, where he died. He initially studied photography, and was inspired by Moholy-Nagy to move to Paris in 1932. There he associated with the Surrealist group and began drawing. He worked as a photographer at the Paris World's Fair in 1937, and at the same time developed a wide range of interests, including painting, music, and literature. After being detained in France in 1940, he began to seriously pursue painting. He held a solo exhibition in Paris in 1947, and also attracted attention with his illustrations for works by Kafka and Sartre. His style is dreamy abstract painting with delicate linear trajectories, and he is one of the founders of tachisme (derived from the French word tache, meaning a stain or stain, and referring to works with a tendency towards abstract expressionism in the early 1950s) and is regarded as one of its representative painters.
