Roman mythology One of the dwarf planets. It was discovered in 1801 by the Italian Piacci between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. It was initially thought to be a planet, but as similar small celestial bodies were discovered nearby, it was classified as an asteroid along with them, and was named the first of its kind. In 2006, it was reclassified as a "dwarf planet," a new category established by the International Astronomical Union. Its diameter is about 1,000 km, making it much larger than the surrounding asteroids. Ceres. Source: About Shogakukan Digital Daijisen Information | Legend |
