Japanese beetle (Popillia japonica)

Japanese: マメコガネ(豆黄金) - マメコガネ（英語表記）Popillia japonica

An insect (illustration) of the family Scarabaeidae in the order Coleoptera. Both adults and larvae are known as pests of agricultural crops, fruit trees, and floriculture. The head and thorax of adults have a dark green metallic sheen, and the forewings are yellowish brown with stripes. The body length is about 10 mm. Adults appear from around May and have the habit of gathering in groups during the day to eat leaves, causing significant damage to soybeans, adzuki beans, grapes, etc. They are most commonly seen in various places from Hokkaido to Kyushu, and are also distributed in North America.

甲虫目(鞘翅（しようし）類)のコガネムシ科の昆虫（イラスト）。成虫，幼虫ともに農作物，果樹および花卉園芸の害虫として知られる。成虫の頭部，胸部は暗緑色の金属光沢があり，上翅は黄褐色で条溝がある。体長10mm内外。成虫は5月ころから出現し，日中に群がって葉を食べる習性があり，ダイズ，アズキ，ブドウなどが著しい被害を受けることがある。北海道から九州まで各地にもっともふつうに見られるほか，北アメリカにも分布する。
