1902‐1987 One of Egypt's three greatest writers. Born in Alexandria to a Turkish mother and an Egyptian father. Initially studied law in Cairo and then studied in France, but his interest gradually shifted to the arts, particularly literature. After returning to Egypt, he worked as a civil servant for several years, but from around 1930 he devoted himself to writing, initially making a name for himself as a playwright. After serving in important positions such as director of the Egyptian National Assembly Library and member of the Academy of Arts and Sciences, he received the Lotus Prize from the Congress of Asian and African Writers in 1976. His most famous works include The Men of the Cave and The Return of the Soul (both 1933), Diary of a Country Attorney (1937), and A Little Bird from the Orient (1938).
