A perennial plant of the Asteraceae family (illustration). In Japan, it has been planted in gardens since the Heian period and used as a cut flower, and its roots are used medicinally. A variety is the dwarf Kozion. It grows upright stems about 1.5 to 2 meters tall, and in autumn it produces corymbs of wisteria-purple flower heads about 2.5 cm in diameter. The leaves are large and oblong-lanceolate with pointed tips, and grow at the base, but the stem leaves are small and alternate. It is distributed from Korea to Siberia and Mongolia, and grows wild in Kyushu and the Chugoku region of Japan, but it is not clear whether it is an original wild species or an introduced species that has become naturalized.
