It is one of the medieval universities founded in 1388 in the free city of Cologne by a papal papal bull from Pope Urbanus VI. Modelled on the University of Paris in France, it competed with the University of Heidelberg for prestige, mainly in theology, but gradually fell into disuse. When occupied by France in 1798, the university was closed. In the 20th century, it was rebuilt as a single-discipline business university (1901) and absorbed the clinical medical academy (1904). In 1919, the Prussian government signed a contract with the city of Cologne to make it a comprehensive university, and after World War II, it was transferred to the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. As of 1999, it has seven faculties: economics and social sciences, law, medicine, philosophy, mathematics and natural sciences, education, and special education and therapy, with approximately 2,000 faculty members and 63,000 students.
