...The regulations were restrictive for the time, with restrictions on the number of times it could be used and the age of the victim. It is said that harsh torture was used from the Middle Ages to the early modern period, but the Shogunate law of the late Edo period specified four methods: whipping (binding), stone-holding (abacus torture), shrimp torture, and hanging torture. Of these, only hanging torture was specifically called torture and was applied only to serious crimes, while the other three were called romon (prison torture) to distinguish them.
