A city in the province of Hainau in southwest Belgium. Population 33,000 (1978). Located on the border with France, facing the River Scheldt. Carpet, leather and cement industries are located here. It was already a city in Roman times, and in the early Frankish period it was an important political centre as the home of the Merovingian dynasty. From the end of the 12th century it linked up with the French kings, developed into a commune and became an important medieval city. [Morimoto Yoshiki] [art] Notre-Dame Cathedral (12th-13th century) is the most magnificent building in Belgium and had a major influence on church architecture in the Scheldt basin.
