A copper alloy for bearings containing 23-40% lead. It is used by fusing it to a thickness of about 0.5-1.5 mm onto a 2-4 mm thick mild steel base. It is characterized by minimal temperature rise during use, and is used as a high-speed, high-load bearing in aircraft, automobiles, diesel engines, etc. Copper and lead do not dissolve in solid solution, so they are prone to segregation when cast into the base. It is recommended to add a small amount of nickel, silver, etc., and then rapidly cool in cold water after casting. Recently, in order to prevent segregation, a method has become common in which coarse particles of copper or copper-nickel alloy are baked onto the base to make it porous, and then Kelmet is infiltrated into it (→Powder metallurgy).
