Located in northern China and bordering Mongolia. An autonomous region mainly populated by Mongolians. The Yinshan Mountains run through the center, the northern part is covered with grasslands and the Gobi Desert, and the southern part is covered with the Yellow River, forming a grain-producing region of the Hetao Plain. In addition to Mongolians, the inhabitants are Han, Dafur, Evenki, Oroqen, Hui, Manchu, and Korean, with Mongolians making up one-third of the total population. Established in 1947 as China's first autonomous region. Its capital is Hohhot. It borders Mongolia and Russia to the north. Transportation is mainly by rail, with railways connecting Jingbao (Beijing - Baotou), Baolan (Baotou - Lanzhou), Ji'er (Jining - Erenhot), Jingtong (Beijing - Tongliao), Tongrang (Tongliao - Ranghu Road), and Binzhou (Harbin - Manchuria). Roads also connect various parts of the region, and an air route has been opened between Beijing and Hohhot. The main industry is livestock farming, but forestry is thriving in the Greater Khingan Mountains area in the northeast, and forest resources account for one-sixth of the country's total. Coal reserves are the second largest in the country after Shanxi Province. 1,183,000 ^km2 . Population: 24.6 million (2014).

中国北部，モンゴルと接する。モンゴル民族を中心とする自治区。中央部を陰山山脈が横切り，北部は草原とゴビ砂漠，南部は黄河が河套(かとう)平原の穀倉地帯を形成している。住民はモンゴル族のほか，漢族，ダフール族，エベンキ族，オロチョン族，回族，満州族，朝鮮族などが居住するが，モンゴル族が全体の３分の１を占めている。1947年中国初の自治区として設置された。主都はフフホト（呼和浩特）市。北はモンゴル，ロシアと国境を接する。交通は鉄道が中心で，京包（北京〜パオトウ），包蘭（パオトウ〜蘭州），集二（集寧〜エレンホト），京通（北京〜通遼），通譲（通遼〜譲湖路），浜洲（ハルビン〜マンチュリー）などの鉄路が通じ，道路も自治区内各地に通じ，北京〜フフホト間には航空路も開設されている。産業は全体として牧畜業が主体だが，東北部の大興安嶺一帯（興安嶺）は林業が盛んで，森林資源は全国の６分の１を占める。また，石炭埋蔵量は山西省に次ぎ全国第２位。118万3000km²。2460万人（2014）。
