A family dispute in the Kagoshima Domain that occurred at the end of the Edo period. Also known as the Kaei Hoto Incident or the Takasaki Collapse. The Kagoshima Domain, which promoted chamberlain Chosho Hirosato to a position of authority and restored the domain's finances, had managed to stockpile 500,000 ryo by 1844. Around this time, a faction supported Shimazu Nariakira as the successor to the lord of the domain, Shimazu Narioki, and the Chosho Hirosato faction feared that the domain's finances would deteriorate again if Nariakira became lord of the domain, were in conflict. The Chosho faction sought to support Nariakira's half-brother Shimazu Hisamitsu (son of the concubine Oyura) and allied with Oyura. The faction supporting Nariakira forced Chosho Hirosato to commit suicide after he was found guilty of smuggling, but the real power in the domain remained in the hands of the Chosho faction. The supporters of Nariakira further plotted to assassinate Hisamitsu and Oyura, which was discovered by the feudal lord Narioki, and the mastermind, Takasaki Goroemon Atsutaka, and others were forced to commit seppuku, while over 40 others were sentenced to death or exiled. As a result of this incident in 1849-1850, Narioki retired, and with the help of the Shogunate elder statesman Abe Masahiro and others, Shimazu Nariakira became the feudal lord the following year in 1851.
