This printing workshop was founded by W. Morris and was named after his villa near Oxford. It was established in 1891 and continued in existence until 1898, two years after Morris' death, during which time it published 53 books and 65 volumes. It was part of Morris' artistic activities, which idealized medieval handicrafts, and it learned a lot from medieval manuscript decoration and Renaissance books, making important contributions to the history of early modern private bookbinding, such as the layout of pages in a double-page spread, the use of handmade paper that clearly reflected black ink, and Morris' own invention of two fonts, the initials 644, and ornaments.

W.モリスのはじめた印刷工房で，名称は彼のオックスフォード近郊の別荘の名にちなむ。1891年設立，モリスの死後2年を経た98年まで存続し，その間に53部65巻の書物を出版した。中世の手工業を理想とするモリスの芸術活動の一環をなすもので，中世の写本装飾やルネサンスの書物に多くを学んでおり，見開きの状態での紙面構成，黒インキを鮮明に写す手漉（てすき）紙の使用，モリス自身による二つの字体と644のイニシャル，およびオーナメントの考案等，近世の私家本製本の歴史に重要な貢献をした。
