Gelfand, Israil Moiseyevich
Born: September 2, 1913, Okuny, Russian Empire
[Died] October 5, 2009. New Jersey, New Brunswick, USA. Russian mathematician. A pioneering figure in a wide range of fields in mathematics, including functional analysis, commutative normed algebras, group representation theory, and generalized function theory. Functional analysis and group representation theory have brought indispensable methods not only to mathematics, but also to physics, such as quantum mechanics and particle physics. In 1932, while working at the Lenin Library and studying mathematics, he was discovered by the renowned mathematician Andrei N. Kolmogorov, who supervised him as a research student at Moscow University. He obtained his Ph.D. in Mathematics in 1935 and his Ph.D. in Science in 1938. He became a professor at Moscow University in 1941. He trained many successors in his seminars. He served as president of the Moscow Mathematical Society from 1968 to 1970, moved to the United States in 1989, taught at Harvard University and other institutions, and has been a professor at Rutgers University since 1990. He was awarded the Order of Lenin three times. He has received numerous awards, including the Wolf Prize in 1978 and the Kyoto Prize in 1989.
