Stein-Leventhal syndrome

In 1935, American obstetrician-gynecologists Irving F. Stein and Michael L. Leventhal reported on a patient whose ovaries had swollen and become polycystic, resulting in infertility. Today, cases of polycystic ovary syndrome that combine infertility, hirsutism, virilization symptoms, obesity, and other symptoms are called Stein-Leventhal syndrome. In the case of Japanese people, there are few cases with such typical virilization symptoms, but cases of polycystic ovary syndrome alone are by no means uncommon among women with amenorrhea and infertility.

1935年にアメリカの産婦人科医シュタインIrving F.SteinとレーベンタールMichael L.Leventhalとが両側の卵巣が腫大して多囊胞性変化を起こして不妊になっている患者の報告を行って以来，今日では，不妊，多毛，男性化症状，肥満などの症状を兼ね備えた多囊胞卵巣症例をシュタイン=レーベンタール症候群と呼んでいる。日本人の場合には，このように典型的な男性化症候を備えた症例は少ないが，多囊胞卵巣だけの症例は無月経や不妊症の婦人に決して少なくはない。
