A biennial plant of the family Violaceae, with 30 to 40 species found in Europe, Africa, and Asia. Several species are cultivated for flower beds and for cut flowers, but the most commonly grown is A. azurea Mill. (= A. italica Retz.), native to the Mediterranean coast, which produces beautiful indigo-colored flowers in May and June. The plant grows to a height of 1 to 1.5 meters, with large, oblong leaves and coarse hairs on the stems and leaves, hence the Japanese name Ushinoshitakusa. In spring, the branches are divided and produce five-petaled tubular flowers in cymes at the tips. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
