A faction of the papacy in medieval Italian history. In Italian, it is called Guelfo. It was opposed to the Ghibellines (the faction of the emperor). The origin of the name comes from the House of Welf of Saxony, who opposed the Staufen dynasty. It was centered on the League of Lombard cities, which opposed Frederick I's Italian campaign. In the 13th century, it led the anti-imperial movement against Frederick II, and from the second half of the 13th century onwards, it mainly engaged in the anti-feudal struggle in Italy. → Related article Kingdom of Naples Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
