Born: 1895. San Luca, Reggio Calabria [Died] June 11, 1956. Rome. Italian poet and novelist. He participated in World War I and sustained serious injuries to both arms. One of his early collections of poems is Poesie grigioverdi (1917). He later edited many newspapers and magazines, including Stampa and Corriere della Sera, and immediately after the collapse of the Fascist regime, he became the editor of Popolo di Roma. His representative works include Gente in Aspromonte (30), a collection of short stories depicting the lives of poor peasants and shepherds in his native Calabria, and Quasi una vita (51), which won the Strega Prize.
