This painting is considered one of Picasso's masterpieces. Guernica is an old town in the Basque Country in northern Spain. On April 26, 1937, during the Spanish Civil War, a large squadron of the Nazi German Air Force, supporting General Franco, bombed this defenseless town indiscriminately. Picasso, who had been commissioned to create a mural for the Spanish Republic Pavilion at the Paris World's Fair that same year, immediately began work on the mural in his Paris studio upon hearing the tragic news of his homeland's destruction. In just one and a half months, he completed the large-scale painting, measuring 3.45m in height and 7.7m in width, which he named "Guernica." It was kept at the Museum of Modern Art in New York from 1939 to 1981, and was returned to Spain in September 1981 and exhibited at the Prado Museum, but was later moved to the Reina Sofia National Museum of Art.
