《Osaka Nippo》 - Osaka Nippo

…The major small newspapers are the Yomiuri Shimbun, the Kana Yomi Shimbun, the Tokyo Eiri Shimbun, and the Eiri Jiyu Shimbun. In Osaka, the major newspaper is the Osaka Nippo, and the smaller newspapers are the Naniwa Shimbun and the Asahi Shimbun. Outside of Tokyo and Osaka, it is difficult to categorize newspapers into major and minor. …

[From the Mainichi Shimbun]

...Its predecessors were the Osaka Mainichi Shimbun (Daimai) and the Tokyo Nichi Nichi Shimbun (Tounichi). Daimai was first published in February 1876 as the Osaka Nippo newspaper, with Nishikawa Hajime (1831-1904) as publisher, and was in effect succeeded by the Nihon Rikken Seito Shimbun, which was established in 1882 as a "substitute paper" to combat the pen crisis (it also inherited its issue number). In 1885, it changed its title back to the Osaka Nippo newspaper, and after a temporary suspension, it was relaunched as the Osaka Mainichi Shimbun in November 1888 with the support of the Osaka business community.
