[Died] May 9, 2003. New York American playwright. Graduated from the University of Illinois. His debut work, The Connection (1959), which is also his best-known work, depicts the world of drug addicts in a play-within-a-play format, and drew attention for its innovative direction and acting by Living Theatre. Other works include "The Apple" (1961), which is about a small theater company in a coffee shop; "Square in the Eye" (1965), which criticizes modern American civilization through the lens of married life; and "The Cuban Thing" (1968), which depicts the final days of the Batista regime and the rise of Castro.
