Silver bromide

Silver bromide

A compound of silver and bromine. When an aqueous solution of alkali bromide is added to an aqueous solution of silver nitrate, it precipitates. It is a pale yellow solid. It is highly photosensitive, and when exposed to light, it releases silver and turns black. It dissolves in aqueous solutions of alkali cyanide and sodium thiosulfate, forming a complex salt. It is slightly soluble in aqueous ammonia, and insoluble in ethanol (ethyl alcohol). It dissolves in hot concentrated nitric acid, but the solution gives the double salt AgNO 3 · AgBr (melting point 182 ° C). It has the highest photosensitivity among silver halides, and forms a latent image when exposed to light, electron beams, and various types of radiation, and is developed with a developer. For this reason, it is widely used as the photosensitive component of photographic materials, and is contained in photographic films, dry plates, and photographic paper. However, since the long wavelength end of visible light to which silver bromide is sensitive is around 500 nanometers, it is not sensitive to yellow or red light. For this reason, sensitizing dyes are added to normal photosensitive materials.
