Shigehide Ogiwara
Year of death: 26 September 1713 (13 November 1713)
Year of birth: Manji 1 (1658)
A shogunate official in the early and mid-Edo period. Commonly known as Gozaemon or Hikojiro. Second son of shogunate official Jusuke Taneshige. In 1674 he became a shogunate official, and the following year was awarded 150 bales of rice. In 1683 he was promoted to shogunate official and given an additional 100 bales of rice. In 1687 he was ordered to audit the accounts of the sodaikan (general official), and in the same year he was promoted to shogunate official sasozoeyaku (later shogunate ginmiyaku) with an additional 300 koku, his bales of rice were changed to 550 koku as a local chigyotori. In 1689 he was awarded 200 koku, and in 1689 he was awarded 1,000 koku. The following year he was promoted to shogunate official, and given an additional 250 koku, and appointed as Omi no Kami (Junior Fifth Rank). He was further granted an additional 500 koku in 1711, 700 koku in 1705, and 500 koku in 1709, giving him a total of 3,700 koku of land. He led the shogunate's finances from the latter half of the Tokugawa Tsunayoshi era through to the Tokugawa Ienobu era, but was ousted in 1712 after being impeached by Arai Hakuseki. His proactive response to the commodity economy, such as coinage reform and trade policies, can be commended, but on the other hand, it cannot be denied that corruption arose as a result of his ties with merchants.
