A general term for insects belonging to the family Coniopterygidae in the order Neuroptera. They are the smallest of all the Neuroptera, with wings that span 3-10 mm. Their bodies and wings are covered with white wax, and they are easily mistaken for Hemiptera whiteflies. Their wing veins are also degenerate, making them a unique group among the suborder Planoptera. They are widely distributed throughout the world except for the polar regions, and 240 species are known, with five species recorded in Japan. The emergence period of adults varies by species but ranges from April to October, and they are mainly found on pines and evergreen oaks. Semidalis albata (illustration) appears in large numbers on Japanese cypress hedges in early summer. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
