...The first type is one in which a long neck penetrates a rectangular or circular sounding body from the side, like the Japanese kokyu. The one-stringed rabāb al-sha'ir (poet's kokyu) (illustration) used by the Arab Bedouins is a typical example. The two-stringed kokyu with a hemispherical sounding body made from coconut shells or burrs is called rabāb al-mughanni (musician's kokyu). The Indonesian kokyu with the same structure as the latter is called rebāb (illustration).
