Japanese: イナゴ(稲子) - イナゴ

One of the most common grasshoppers in Japan. Known as a pest of rice paddies. The Japanese name "inago" means "rice-feeding insect," and is a general term for insects belonging to the Orthoptera, Acridae family, and Oxya genus. They are widely distributed from the African continent through Southeast Asia to Japan and Primorsky Krai, and 18 species are known. In Japan, the representative species are the Japanese grasshopper O. japonica japonica (illustration) and the long-winged grasshopper O. chinensis , found south of Honshu, and others include the Hokkaido and Tohoku regions' Ezo grasshopper O. yezoensis and the Koi grasshopper O. hyla intricata , found south of the Ryukyu Islands.

日本でもっともふつうに見られる代表的なバッタの一つ。水田の害虫として知られる。和名のイナゴはイネにつく虫の意で，直翅目バッタ科イナゴ属Oxyaに属する昆虫を総称していう。アフリカ大陸から東南アジアを経て，日本や沿海州に至る地域に広く分布し，18種が知られている。日本では，本州以南に見られるコバネイナゴO.japonica japonica（イラスト）やハネナガイナゴO.chinensisが代表的で，ほかに北海道や東北地方にすむエゾイナゴO.yezoensisや琉球諸島以南にすむコイナゴO.hyla intricataが知られている。
