A Roman author from the 1st century. He was also called Celsus. He wrote the Encyclopedia, of which only De Medicina (On Medicine) remains. It is considered to be on a par with the Hippocratic Collected Works, and is especially valuable as a work that conveys the image of Alexandrian medicine and Greek surgery, which have been almost completely lost. This book was ignored in the Middle Ages, but was discovered by Pope Nicholas V and reevaluated after the Renaissance. Since the Florentine edition was published in 1478, it became one of the most widely read medical books in Europe during the Renaissance. It consists of eight volumes, and describes a method for breaking up bladder stones by inserting a finger into the rectum, which is still called Celsus' operation, and he also has several names in surgery and dermatology. He devoted a chapter to medical administration, and left behind maxims such as "The art of medicine is ars conjecturalis, and sometimes it is wrong."

1世紀頃のローマの著述家。セルサスともいう。『大百科全書』を著わし，そのうちの『医学について』 De Medicinaだけが残存している。ヒポクラテス全集と並び称され，ことに，ほとんど亡失したアレクサンドリアの医学およびギリシアの外科学の面影を伝えるものとして，貴重である。この本は中世には無視されていたが，教皇ニコラウス5世によって発見され，ルネサンス以後再評価された。 1478年にフィレンツェ版が刊行されて以来，ルネサンス期にヨーロッパで最もよく読まれた医書の一つとなった。8巻あり，直腸から指を入れて膀胱結石を破砕する方法が記載されており，いまもケルスス手術と呼ばれるほか，外科，皮膚科にもいくつか名を残している。医師事務論に1章をさき，「医術は予測術 ars conjecturalisで，ときにははずれる」などの格言を残している。
