...A city in the northern part of the Ishikari Plain in central Hokkaido. In 1963, the three towns of Fukagawa, Itchiyan, and Osamunai merged with the village of Otoe to form a city. Population 28,770 (1995). The Ishikari River flows west from the Kamuikotan gorge, and the Uryu River flows south. Fukagawa, in the center of the city, was the location of the office of the Kikutei Farm, one of the aristocratic farms, around 1890, and in 1895, 500 Tondenhei families who had settled in Itchiyan and Osamunai began full-scale development.
