…Even among the Romantics, Wiertz directed his imagination towards fantastical and grotesque themes. As one can easily imagine from the fact that realistic painting and a love of reality were traditional characteristics of Flemish art, in the mid-19th century, when realism flourished throughout Europe, outstanding painters such as Henri de Braekeleer (1840-88), who painted tranquil, light-filled interior scenes, and Guillaume Vogels (1836-96), who used his brushstrokes to paint poetic landscapes, emerged. In the second half of the 19th century, painters who were active in Paris rather than in their own country included Stevens, who painted elegant female customs, Rops, who specialized in demonic and lustful themes, and Henri Evenepoel (1872-99), who studied under Moreau and was influenced by the Impressionists. …
